THE KEY TO THE FUTURE
Crucial for the future of the planet
The agrifood sector provides livelihoods for over 1.23 billion people worldwide. According to FAO estimates, to feed the projected 9.1 billion people by 2050, the sector will need to produce 70% more food using similar resources, but in a more equitable manner. However, biodiversity loss threatens this objective: the FAO report The State of the World’s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture (2019) highlights that 75% of crop genetic diversity has been lost within a century, leaving crops vulnerable to climate change and diseases. Furthermore, the IPBES Global Assessment Report (2019) notes that 10% of plant species are threatened with extinction, causing irreversible impacts on agroecosystems.
At the same time, climate change, unequal food distribution, soil degradation, international conflicts, and water scarcity complicate food production.
Compounding this is the environmental impact of packaging: according to Eurostat (2022), only 41% of plastic packaging in the EU is recycled, while the remainder contributes to land and marine pollution, damaging biodiversity. The use of biodegradable materials is crucial to mitigating this impact.
New approaches, reduced waste, and a greater respect for nature are urgently needed.
Agrifood startups can drive agroecological practices and sustainable packaging: the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 encourages organic farming, while McKinsey’s Global Packaging Sustainability Report (2023) highlights that biodegradable materials can cut the sector’s emissions by 30% by 2030, supporting the ecological transition.
INVESTMENT STRATEGY
Acceleration program
The program is created in collaboration with
DURATION
Over a 4-year period, LaGemma Venture will invest up to 1 million Euros in startups that apply to the Call4future and complete its acceleration program.
INVESTMENT STRATEGY
The investment will mainly take place through a convertible, i.e., an interest-free loan convertible into equity in the startup.
The convertible note is a financing instrument typically used by early-stage startups because it represents a simple, fast, and cost-effective way to raise initial funds without the immediate need to formally onboard a new equity partner, avoiding all the associated burdens. The equity conversion by LaGemma Venture will take place if the startup demonstrates strong business performance and/or raises capital from other investors.
DELIVERY MODE
The transfer of funds will take place in two tranches.
The first will be disbursed at the start of the acceleration program, and the second midway through the program, subject to the achievement of mutually agreed milestones.

DURATA
LaGemma Venture, nell’arco temporale di 4 anni, investirà fino ad 1 milione di Euro in startup che si candideranno alle Call4future e seguiranno il suo programma di accelerazione.
COME INVESTIAMO

FOCUS AREAS
We select startups capable of developing innovative products, services, and models that address production sustainability challenges, improve the management and promotion of public green spaces and agricultural systems, transform the food system into a sustainable, efficient, and consumer-oriented model, and develop solutions for human and animal well-being.
AGRICOLTURE
"For us, agriculture remains an open challenge—one that, starting this year, expands to include public green spaces in order to design more livable cities. In this field, innovation becomes a key tool to safeguard the land, respect its balance, protect the ecosystems that sustain us, and better manage natural resources by using them intelligently and responsibly.
Innovative solutions for the management and enhancement of public green spaces and agricultural systems.
AGRICOLTURE
FOOD AND NUTRITION
Today, discussing food and nutrition means going beyond the simple concept of food itself. It means addressing a complex issue that intertwines global balances and profound transformations—one need only think of the impact that climate change and global population growth are having on the sector. The food challenge embraces the entire supply chain: from product to packaging, from the production process to the promotion of cultural and educational models geared toward more conscious consumption.
Novel foods, technologies for more sustainable food processing, biodegradable and compostable packaging materials, and educational solutions to reduce food waste.
FOOD AND NUTRITION
WELL-BEING
Today, well-being is a broad and profound concept that encompasses how we live, our daily choices, and the care we dedicate to ourselves and the surrounding environment. The need for greater focus on this topic has sparked a new challenge—one that involves both humans and animals, aiming to improve quality of life through innovative solutions.
Solutions for human and animal nutritional well-being: nourishing the body, supporting the mind, and improving quality of life.
